Chimú culture (ca. AD 800–1400) developed on the northern coast of Peru after the collapse of the Huarí Empire. The Chimú capital, Chan Chan, was one of the most spectacular cities in the ancient Andes. Nearly all Chimú pottery was made in molds. The Chimú vessel presented here is an unusually knobby and very large squash, suggesting the importance of agriculture among the Chimú. Chimú vessels are predominately blackware. This one dates from AD 1100 to 1500.
