The Paracas and Nazca cultures flourished on the arid coast of southern Peru and in the Atacama Desert. There they developed some the most elaborate and technologically advanced weaving techniques in the world at the time. Throughout Peruvian history before contact, the tunic, with or without sleeves, was the primary item of clothing for men. As seen here, tunics have a vertical slit opening at the top for the neck.
