This headdress is worn by Karuk men during the Xay-ch´idilye, or Jump Dance, the last of three related ceremonies performed every two years to bring balance back into the world. Only after the completion of the Xonsil-ch´idilye (White Deerskin Dance) and the Ta:´altul (Boat Dance) will the people begin the Jump Dance.
